Haven Emergency Shelter

The long term plans for Restoring Hope Ministries is to have a continuum of shelter and housing services for homeless youth, both young men and young women between the ages of 16-25.

Our first step in this process was the creation of Haven First Baptist Church Ottawa, 140 Laurier Avenue, Ottawa. This space allows us to provide beds for 15~18 youth per night and is open on Friday, Saturday and Sundays evenings. A wide range of activities such as music, games, art, movies, books, etc. is also provided.

Our second step was to open one additional evening. This became a reality in early December 2015 when the creation of a second Haven was opened at the Fourth Avenue Baptist Church, 109A Fourth Avenue, Ottawa. This location offers more space to shelter a larger number of youth, plus showers are available to them.

The shelters are manned by a minimum of two to three volunteers and a part-time staff who provides security and also develops relationships with the youth. The youth who stay at the shelter are provided with clean socks, toiletries, a clean bed, and healthy snacks. In the morning the youth each get a bag lunch to take with them before they leave. Youth are also be connected to resources within the city which will help them with finding housing, finishing school, or obtaining help for addictions and mental health problems. Volunteers are trained on building meaningful encounters with each youth, and in sharing the hope that God has for their lives.
